Travel Report: Maskbook in Belgium with PointCulture

Maskbook had a busy two months in Belgium this year : Starting with La nuit des masques, accompanied by a DJ and its patron, renowned climatologist Jean-Pascal van Ypersele , the masked party was a great success, with over 250 participants.

Over the next couple weeks, 12 workshops were organized at different Point Culture locations in 8 Belgian cities ( en français: Bruxelles, ULB, Charleroi, Namur, Liège, Louvain-la-Neuve, Namur, Mobile ) and 10 more workshops were organized by a wide range of partner organizations which included theaters, higher education institutions, museum initiatives, and cultural centers for creativity.

There were 550 masks created as a result of the various mask-making workshops throughout Belgium, 20 of whom belonged to a wide range of well-known Belgium-based personalities, such as choreographer Bud Blumenthal, photographer Celine Bataille, glaciologist Frank Pattyn, ex director of Greenpeace Michel Denet, Captain of the national female soccer team Aline Zeler and pop music duo Faon Faon, not to mention the Princess Esmeralda of Belgium.

The participants of the workshops came from an equally diverse pool of cultural and sustainable organizations and institutions, such as Bees Coop, the first cooperative and participative supermarket in Belgium and the global wildlife and environment conservation organization, the Jane Goodall Institute.

Maskbook also was on display in the form of an exhibition at three PointCulture locations, in Brussels, in Liège, and in Charleroi as well as at the théâtre 140 of Brussels.
